51.
Let's start at the beginning shall we?

 52.

53.
I'm going to assume, and forgive me for this, that you know nothing about Wicca and that you don't understand all of the big words. Let's say you stumbled onto this site accidentally and you have no idea what I'm talking about. The first thing you'll need to know is that there are different levels of magick. And no, I'm not talking about a game. I'm talking about in the real world, and in your life as well as mine. The second thing I should tell you is that someone who practices a higher level of magick than the average person is practicing witchcraft. And, if someone is practicing witchcraft then we call that person a witch. Wiccans, which is what I am, practice a more specific type of Witchcraft. We have beliefs and traditions and rules that are singular to our group. But we are still witches.

 54.
Wicca has been controversial for as far back as I can recall. I became a Wiccan in July of 1999. I spent a year and a day, or approximately that, studying the basics of Witchcraft and Wicca. In my opinion, and you are free to disagree with me, Witchcraft is an umbrella for different religions. Wicca happens to fall under that umbrella. Christianity is to Catholicism as Witchcraft is to Wicca. Which means that a Witch can be a Wiccan, but does not have to be. A Wiccan, however, is a Witch and as such must follow both the laws of Witchcraft and the laws of Wicca.

 55.
Let's concentrate on the Witchcraft part before we get to Wicca. Witchcraft is the practice of higher level magick. Other people can argue with me on the definition of higher level magick but this is how I'm defining it here. Higher level magick is, for this discussion, anything above prayer. It is the conscious decision to change something, from air currents to politics to weather, by force of will using a spell, a potion, or a ritual. Are you with me so far? Good.

 56.
While we're still on the subject of Witchcraft, let's discuss the Laws of Modern Witchcraft. These Laws were set down in April of 1974 by the American Council of Witches and they are pretty basic.

 57.
#1 We practice rites to attune ourselves with the natural rhythm of life forces marked by the phases of the Moon and the seasonal Quarters and Cross Quarters.

 58.
Oh, yeah, like that makes sense. Well, actually it does, but only if you know what all of the big words mean. Let's just go through that one piece at a time shall we?

 59.
We practice rites...

 60.
American Witches practice rites... Well, what is a rite? A rite is just a ceremony, in this case a religious one, like a baptism or a wedding. So, what kinds of ceremonies do Witches practice?

 61.
... to attune ourselves with the natural rhythm of life forces ...

 62.
Gee, they like these big words, don't they? Well, this is what they [The American Council of Witches] mean: We have ceremonies to make the way we live harmonious to the way the Earth lives. In order to find balance in our lives we Witches adjust and try to live the way Mother Nature intended us to.

 63.
marked by the phases of the Moon and the seasonal Quarters and Cross Quarters.

 64.
Yippee, we're almost done with #1. This just means that Witches measure their year, their holidays, and the phases of their lives, by the Moon. Seasonal Quarters, by the way, are just the four seasons of the year: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn. A Witches New Year is in October. They celebrate Samhain, or All Hallow's Eve, and New Year's all in one. Most people call this Witchy holiday Halloween. Check out this Almanac from Archaeoastronomy to see all of the Witchy holidays and when they occur.
 65.
One little note for all of you aspiring Witches out there who live in Christian homes, don't worry too much about this rule. Way back, when the Christian Church was deciding on its holidays they adopted the pagan holidays for their own. Jesus Christ was not really born in December, he was born in February.
